Stakeholders in the built environment sector are stressing the importance of incorporating reliable and sustainable water supply systems into housing designs, and urging innovative approaches to water management in residential development.
Dr Chukwumezie Okolo, founder of RitePlace Synergy Limited, is advocating for a fundamental shift in water management practices, prioritizing health and environmental considerations in development initiatives.
“As we move forward, it is essential that we adopt a more intentional approach to development, one that prioritises the health and well-being of our citizens and considers the impact on our environment.”
Dr Chukwumezie Okolo is promoting the development of smart homes that incorporate water treatment solutions and eco-friendly sewage disposal systems, highlighting the fundamental human right to access quality water.
He urges policymakers, real estate developers, and stakeholders to prioritize water quality in housing designs.
However, Dr Samson Opaluwah, Chairman of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria, disagrees, stating that water supply is the sole responsibility of government and water supply authorities, not property developers.
He suggests that individuals can install water purification systems in their homes, while builders ensure that necessary fittings are in place, but developers cannot be held responsible for water quality.
“Occupants can install water purification systems at their level. We should ensure that our public water systems work. In the buildings, we reticulate and make sure that the fittings are in place and where they are designed to be,” he explained.
