Tension erupts in Rivers State after the recent local elections.
There are reports of shootings, fires, and fights at different local government offices in the state, especially in Ikwerre, Oyigbo, and Ahoada East areas.
In some places, people are protesting and shouting slogans like “No Wike, no Rivers State, no Wike, no Secretariat,” as seen in a popular video.
During the swearing-in ceremony of the council chairmen by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, he mentioned that there are plans by some enemies of the state to start violence against the newly appointed local government chairmen.
Fubara disclosed that certain groups were organizing 20 individuals per political unit to assault the chairmen when they arrive at their council offices to start work. He cautioned the chairmen not to respond aggressively if violence breaks out.
According to reports, in the recent election, opposition parties like the Action Peoples Party, Action Alliance, and Labour Party secured some positions. The leading Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have chosen not to participate in the election.
