Professor Charles Anosike, the Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), revealed plans to upgrade the agency’s seasonal climate forecasting capabilities as a key strategy for mitigating disaster risks.
This announcement was made on Tuesday at the NiMet headquarters in Abuja, during a visit from Professor Sa’adatu Liman, the Vice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University.
The agency has issued a statement indicating that NiMet and the university will intensify their collaboration, focusing on joint research initiatives and outreach programs to achieve their objectives.
“NiMet and Nasarawa State University can collaborate on community outreach initiatives to educate the public on weather and climate information,” pointed out the NiMet boss.
Anosike highlighted that the agency is also focusing on early warnings and addressing disaster risks.
He elaborated, “We are also considering early warnings, as they are very important to us. Addressing disaster risks is at the core of what we do. Nasarawa State is very viable concerning agriculture. One major area that we need to start immediately is the downscaling of our seasonal climate prediction.”
In response, Professor Liman expressed the university’s interest in leveraging the partnership to enhance the skills of its staff in meteorology and related disciplines, aligning them with international standards.
“We are visiting our partners to strengthen our relationships. We look forward to renewing the partnership between both institutions in terms of research and education, exchange of staff to enhance teaching and learning, funding of research and education, and training our staff to meet global standards in meteorology and related fields,” noted the vice-chancellor.
