EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Tiffany Haddish grew up in South Central Los Angeles with her father, who was of Eritrean Jewish descent, and her mother, who was African American.

Unfortunately, their family dynamic drastically changed when her mother was involved in a devastating car accident in 1988.

As a result, Tiffany’s father left when she was just three years old, and her mother remarried and had more children.

At a young age, Tiffany took on the role of caregiver for her siblings.

In the midst of the challenges she faced at home and in school, Tiffany found comfort in making people laugh.

She used humor as a way to cope with the difficulties she encountered.

As if her upbringing wasn’t already tumultuous enough, Tiffany later discovered that her stepfather had intentionally tampered with her mother’s car brakes in an attempt to harm the family and collect insurance money.

This revelation further shaped her already chaotic childhood.

At the age of 13, Tiffany was placed in foster care.

However, she didn’t let this setback deter her. Instead, she turned to humor as a means to navigate the challenges she faced.

Two years later, she was reunited with her siblings. Despite struggling academically early on, Tiffany excelled in drama competitions.

Despite experiencing homelessness and trauma, she found her true calling in comedy after attending the Laugh Factory Comedy Camp in 1997.

With the guidance of renowned comedians, Tiffany’s journey ultimately shaped her unique comedic voice.

Although she had the opportunity to attend New York University, Haddish made the decision to decline the offer due to financial worries and instead enrolled at Santa Monica College.

During her twenties, she faced the difficult situation of being homeless while juggling jobs at Air New Zealand and Alaska Airlines in Los Angeles.

However, comedy became her sanctuary, providing her with a platform to share her personal experiences and bring humor into her life despite the obstacles she faced.

CAREER
Tiffany Haddish began her career by making a breakthrough appearance on the show Who’s Got Jokes? She then went on to make appearances on popular TV shows such as Chelsea Lately, My Name Is Earl, and New Girl.

In addition, she had roles in movies like Meet the Spartans and had a recurring role on If Loving You Is Wrong.

However, it was her role on The Carmichael Show and in the film Keanu that really showcased her talent.

Her most notable performance came in 2017 when she played the character Dina in the film Girls Trip, alongside Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Queen Latifah.

This performance received critical acclaim and was a commercial success, grossing over $140 million worldwide.

The New Yorker even recognized her role as one of the best film performances of the 21st century in 2021, praising her authenticity and captivating performance.

In the same year, Haddish debuted her stand-up special on Showtime, which was highly praised for her relatable storytelling.

She made history as the first African-American woman stand-up comedian to host Saturday Night Live and even won a Primetime Emmy.

Furthermore, her memoir, “The Last Black Unicorn,” became a bestselling success.

The following year, in 2018, Haddish starred in The Last O.G., Uncle Drew, and Night School.

She also signed a deal with HBO and received recognition from Time magazine.

In the subsequent year, she appeared in The Lego Movie 2 and Kids Say the Darndest Things, hosted her own Netflix comedy special, and starred in the film Like a Boss alongside other notable actresses.

Haddish turned down an offer to host the pre-telecast ceremony of the 2021 Grammy Awards because the Recording Academy asked her to pay for her own expenses.

She was disappointed that the academy did not support her with hair, makeup, and wardrobe for the event, and she found it disrespectful.

However, she still managed to win the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album for her work on “Black Mitzvah.”

In addition to her music career, Haddish also lent her voice to the character Lady K in the animated series Karma’s World from 2021 to 2022.

From 2022 to 2024, Haddish showcased her acting skills in various films and TV series, including “Easter Sunday,” “Run,” “Haunted Mansion,” “Landscape with Invisible Hand,” and her most recent appearance in “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.”

PERSONAL LIFE

In 2008, Haddish got married to William Stewart, which brought her closer to her estranged father who happily walked her down the aisle.

She described it as one of the happiest days of her life.

However, the couple filed for divorce in Los Angeles County in 2011, and the process was finalized in 2013.

From mid-2020 to November 2021, Haddish was in a relationship with rapper Common.
