UK labour union reacts to DSS arrest of NLC President

Date:

The UK Trade Union Congress (TUC) has strongly condemned the recent apprehension of Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), by the Nigerian Department of State Services (DSS).

The TUC characterized Ajaero’s arrest as a clear form of intimidation and a breach of trade union liberties.

Ajaero, who was captured en route to delivering a speech to the UK TUC, was freed last evening. However, worries persist regarding his safety and ongoing harassment.

The statement read, “Joe was released last night, but it is clear that his ordeal is not yet over.”

The UK TUC underscored that the arrest violated essential trade union rights, notably the right to garner support from global counterparts.

Additionally, the UK organization censured the conduct of the Nigerian government and called for an immediate cessation to the targeting of Ajaero and other NLC officials.

“Nigeria’s trade unions still have our solidarity,” the TUC stated.

“We condemn the actions of the Nigerian government and demand that they end their persecution of Joe Ajaero.”

This statement highlights the worldwide backing for the Nigerian labor movement amid escalating tensions between the NLC and the government.
