Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, the wife of Imo State Governor, emphasized the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the well-being of infants.
At the launch of the 2024 World Breastfeeding Week in Owerri on Tuesday, Mrs. Uzodimma emphasized the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, aligning with the theme “Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all”, highlighting that the annual event, observed from August 1-7, aims to promote and support breastfeeding worldwide.
The Women Affairs Commissioner, Nkechinyere Ugwu, speaking on behalf of the First Lady, highlighted that breastfeeding is acknowledged as a significant public health concern that is essential for infant survival.
Mrs. Uzodimma urged mothers to advocate and practice breastfeeding for at least 1-6 months.
“Let’s all be advocates of breastfeeding. Make sure you breastfeed your babies for at least 1-6 months,” she pointed out.
She also acknowledged the efforts of various organizations and partners, including the Ministry of Health and international bodies like UNICEF and WHO, in supporting maternal and child health programs.
Additionally, she commended the Governors’ Wives Forum for their initiative to encourage simultaneous breastfeeding by around 30,000 women nationwide.
