VMA Award Nominations: Here are the nominees for the Best Afrobeats category

Date:

The MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) nominations have been announced, and Nigeria is proudly represented in the Best Afrobeats category.

Ayra Starr, a talented singer and dancer, received a nomination for her song “Last Heartbreak” featuring American singer Giveon.

Notably, when Ayra Starr first teased the song’s music video, she concealed Giveon’s face, sparking widespread speculation about the identity of the mystery collaborator before his involvement was eventually revealed.

Burna Boy also secured a nomination in the Best Afrobeats category for his hit song “City Boys”, which became a viral sensation upon its release.

The song’s infectious lyrics and signature stomping dance move made it a social media phenomenon, with fans eagerly replicating the move whenever the song played.

Additionally, American singer Chris Brown earned a nomination in the same category for his song “Sensational”, a collaborative effort featuring Nigerian artists Davido and Lojay.

Chris Brown and Davido’s collaboration on “Sensational” was a huge success, topping charts across various platforms. The two artists have a history of working together on projects, with their recent collaboration on “Hmm” also receiving positive reception.

Meanwhile, Tems earned a nomination in the Best Afrobeats category for her song “Love Me Jeje”, a track from her latest album, showcasing her talent and contributions to the Afrobeats genre.

Tems has achieved immense success, accumulating numerous awards, including a Grammy and BET award, among others. Her unique sound has propelled her to international recognition, transcending Nigerian borders at an impressive rate.

Moreso, South African artist Tyla received a nomination in the same category for her song “Water”, which initially sparked widespread attention and buzz around her name.

Tyla’s hit song “Water” earned her a Grammy award, surpassing Nigerian artists like Davido in the process.

Going on, Usher’s nomination for his song “Ruin”, featuring Nigerian producer and singer Pheelz, has sparked controversy and debate around cultural appropriation.

Music journalist Joey Akan has been vocal in his criticism, accusing Nigerian artists of “selling out” their cultural heritage, and questioning Usher’s eligibility for an Afrobeats category nomination.
