The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has retained the results of pupils in public secondary schools in Ondo because of outstanding debts owed to the examination board by the state government.
On Tuesday, pupils from the state who were eager to submit applications to higher education institutions were unable to view their academic results on the WAEC portal.
A student from the region, who chose to remain anonymous, informed The Gazette that she was taken aback to learn that WAEC was withholding her results due to the state’s unpaid fees.
She described how she repeatedly tried to access the website but only received the same ‘indebted’ notification from the exam body.
She stated, “I am one of the candidates who sat for the WASSCE in the state. Some of my mates started noticing this yesterday (Monday), but when I logged in today, I was surprised to see that my result was also withheld due to indebtedness. It’s just annoying, but the school told us they will address it.”
A teacher at one of the impacted accredited schools clarified that the state authorities had been informed about the issue and guaranteed that it would be resolved promptly.
“It is normal practice in the state for the government to pay the fees, but we don’t know why the current administration has not fulfilled this obligation. We have notified the authorities, and we will take it up from there,” he noted.
In response to queries regarding the matter, the commissioner for education, science, and technology, Olaolu Akindolire, attributed the issue to logistical difficulties.
Through the ministry’s representative, Olaoluwa Meshack, Akindolire stated that the challenges affecting the retrieval of the results would be rectified shortly.
He mentioned that the state administration had already tackled the problem with WAEC, indicating that a sum of five hundred and fifty million Naira had been remitted for 26,088 students who took the 2024 WASSCE in public schools within the state.
