Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) contender for the forthcoming Edo State gubernatorial election slated for September 21, 2024, cautioned the voters against electing an uneducated governor.
Delivering his message at a campaign event held at Olua Primary School Field in Uselu, Ighodalo seemed to be alluding to a misstep by the All Progressives Congress (APC) nominee, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
Ighodalo emphasized the necessity for Edo State to have a governor capable of ensuring security and fostering youth development.
He pledged to tap into the innovative capabilities of Edo’s young population for the greater good, expressing his commitment saying, “We do not need an illiterate who will bring insecurity.”
Governor Godwin Obaseki, speaking to the audience, displayed faith in Ighodalo and his deputy, Philip Ogie, to carry on the initiatives he initiated as he exits office on November 12, 2024.
He encouraged the electorate to back the PDP to maintain continuity and drive forward progress.
He said, “I have done my best. Ighodalo and Ogie will continue from November 12. We want progress. We want to move forward and not backward.
“Looking at the people here, you see a lot of youths. I am not surprised because Egor is home to youths. We have the University of Benin and the Benin Technical College.
“September 21 is the most important election in Edo State. Don’t make a mistake. For the sake of continuity, it must be the PDP; Ighodalo is youth-friendly.
“I have known him for 40 years and he is very brilliant. So, no mistake on September 21 because all the works in the Egor Local Government Area are too important to be allowed to stop. Go out early and vote and protect your votes.”
The PDP gathering drew a significant number of young attendees, with party officials and the Edo State PDP chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, expressing gratitude to the residents of Egor for their backing.
