After forty-eight years since the establishment of the Federal Capital Territory, the FCT administration has disclosed intentions to reassess the Abuja Master Plan.
Nyesom Wike, the FCT minister, revealed during a meeting with Japan’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Matsunaga Kazuyoshi, that steps have been initiated to revise the initial blueprint.
In 1976, Abuja was designated as Nigeria’s capital, prompting the relocation of all government offices from Lagos to Abuja.
While rgarding the revision initiative, the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Shehu Ahmad, explained that the scheme focuses on addressing issues related to water drainage systems, enhancing mobility within urban zones, alleviating traffic congestion in the city, and ensuring the execution of a smart city program.
During his speech, the Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, who headed a delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), deliberated on commencing efforts to enhance the Abuja Integrated Urban Development Master Plan.
The delegation also requested Wike’s backing for significant projects launched by JICA in the FCT. In response, Wike guaranteed the team his support and that of the FCTA, as well as crucial departments like the Satellite Towns Development and Land Administration, essential for the revision procedure.
