Yobe State Warns 9 Local Govt Areas Of Potential Flooding

Date:

The Yobe State Government has sounded the alarm for nine Local Government Areas, warning of an impending flood disaster due to the planned release of water from the Dadinkowa and Lagdo dams.

The affected areas include Nguru, Bade, and nine others, where residents are still reeling from recent floods caused by heavy rainfall.

Dr. Mohammed Goje, the head of the State Emergency Management Agency, issued the warning, cautioning that the dam releases would further worsen the situation for those already affected.

“Yobe has experienced significant flooding between April 15 and September 9, 2024, causing widespread devastation across several local government areas.

“This advisory serves as an early warning alert for further flooding due to likely impending water discharge from Dadinkowa dam, Hadeja-Jama’are River, River Kamodugu, and Lagdo dam in Cameroon,” Goje said.

The executive secretary urged residents in the affected areas to take immediate action to protect themselves and their belongings, recommending that they relocate to safer, higher ground to avoid potential flood damage and loss of life.

“Stay informed by regularly listening to updates from traditional leaders, local government authorities, and the state emergency management agency.

“Keep emergency contact details handy for quick access to response services,” he advised.

NAIJATRAFFIC  reports that over 19,000 households across 432 communities were hit by flood in the state.
