Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal announced that the state has begun constructing an international airport to boost trade and tourism. Speaking on Thursday, Lawal highlighted the project’s significance during the unveiling of the Gusau International Airport by Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, according to a statement from Sulaiman Bala Idris, the governor’s spokesperson.
The airport is designed to handle both domestic and international flights, featuring a 3.4-kilometre primary runway suitable for large commercial aircraft, complete with runway lighting and navigational aids. Lawal emphasized his administration’s commitment to making Zamfara an attractive destination for both local and international investors.
“Honourable Minister, guests, ladies, and gentlemen, the airport will include a modern terminal building with passenger facilities like check-in counters, automated baggage handling systems, waiting areas, and customs and immigration services buildings,” the governor said.
Additionally, the airport will have an air traffic control tower with advanced communication and surveillance systems, maintenance hangars, fire and rescue stations, fuel storage facilities, and other support buildings. The project will also feature access roads, parking facilities, and necessary infrastructure for water supply, sewage, electrical systems, and telecommunications. A cargo wing and landscaped surroundings will enhance the airport’s overall appeal.
The project, handled by Triacta Nigeria Limited with JBI Tech Consult as the consulting firm, is expected to be completed within 30 months. Lawal noted the airport’s economic benefits, including direct air access to the state, which will ease the export and import challenges faced by local businesses.
Minister Keyamo acknowledged that Zamfara has lagged in aviation facilities compared to other parts of the northwest despite its status as an agricultural hub. He expressed optimism about the project, emphasizing that the airport is not only commercially viable but also a crucial social amenity. Keyamo expressed his desire to inaugurate Hajj operations at the new airport next year, ending the longstanding difficulties faced by pilgrims from Zamfara.
The minister reiterated his commitment to making the airport a reality, reflecting the state’s readiness for this significant development.
